Thanks for your interest in WOOD102: Handheld power tools! Please note that this is an online, self-guided workshop. Immediately after signing up, you'll receive an email with the link and passcode to access the course. WOOD102 can be found by enrolling in your local instance of the Maker Access Pass and navigating to Complete a Workshop > Woodshop > WOOD102: Handheld power tools.
In order to use any advanced handheld power tools such as the router, jig saw, circular saw, reciprocating saw, and drill press in the woodshop, you must attend this workshop. Please make sure that you've already attended and passed SAF150: Woodshop Safety as well as WOOD101: Woodshop Tool Best Practices before completing this workshop. By the end of the course, you should have a firm handle on:
- How to identify a circular saw, jig saw, reciprocating saw, drill press, and router.
- How and when to use these tools properly and safely.
- How to adjust cut depth and angle of a circular saw
- How to use a guide and follow a guide line using the circular saw
- How to make a plunge cut with a circular saw safely
- How to drill a pilot hole for a jig saw when cutting interior shapes on a project
- How to change a blade on a jig saw
- What blade type and TPI to use with a jig saw for assorted projects
- How to change a bit in a drill press
- How to adjust table height and swivel on a drill press
- The importance of putting the chuck key back where it belongs, and how to use the key
- Proper technique for drilling large holes using a drill press, and how to safely drill into small work pieces
- How to change router bits
- How to identify common router bits and what they’re used for
- How to set the depth of a router bit
Please make sure to enroll in the Maker Access Pass and complete SAF150: Woodshop Safety as well as WOOD101: Woodshop Tool Best Practices before you complete the WOOD102 badge. You can use your badges to track what you've learned, show potential employers, and (after earning enough badges) even receive fun perks. Almost all of our equipment requires training and badges before use.
