SAF150: Woodshop Safety
is an introductory online, self-guided woodshop workshop for the University of Wyoming Innovation Wyrkshop makerspace. Immediately after signing up, you'll receive an email with the link and passcode to access the course. SAF150 can be found by enrolling in the your local instance of the Maker Access Pass and navigating to Complete a Workshop Safety > SAF150: Woodshop Safety. You'll need to attend this course either in-person or online before you can use the woodshop at the EERB makerspace. By the end of the course, you should have a firm handle on:

  • Core safety requirements and policies for working in an introductory to intermediate woodshop, such as those in our Innovation Wyrkshops.
  • Where emergency supplies are located and how to use them if you or another maker is injured.
  • Ability to effectively demonstrate proper wood shop safety such as proper PPE usage.
  • Defining crucial terms like "kickback."
  • Best practices when working around other makers in the woodshop, including how to get a maker's attention safely and how to position yourself and your tools when working with others in the shop.
  • Rules for bringing in personal materials.
  • Rules for cleaning the woodshop and mitigating the spread of sawdust.

Please make sure to enroll in the Maker Access Pass to ensure you receive a badge at the end of this course. You can use your badges to track what you've learned, show potential employers, and (after earning enough badges) even receive fun perks like discounted or free material use, after-hours access, and even an invitation to participate and vote as part of the Makerspace Community Subcommittee. Almost all of our equipment requires training and badges before use.
