Thanks for your interest in WOOD103: Sanding tools! Please note that this is an online, self-guided workshop. Immediately after signing up, you'll receive an email with the link and passcode to access the course.

In order to use the WEN oscillating belt and spindle sander, Shop Fox disc and belt sander, and Dewalt handheld random orbit sander in the EERB Innovation Wyrkshop woodshop, you must attend this workshop. Please make sure that you've already attended and passed SAF150: Woodshop Safety before completing this workshop. By the end of the course, students will:

  • Be able to identify both belt sander (oscillating and stationary), random orbit sander, disc sander and oscillating spindle sander
  • Understand how to use these tools properly and safely
  • Understand different grits of sand paper and when to use each grit
  • Know how to track a belt on a belt sander
  • Know how to change belts on a belt sander
  • Be able to change between the oscillating belt to an oscillating spindle on the WEN sander
  • Be able to put the workpiece guard on the WEN sander for belt sanding
  • Understand how to identify the proper throat plate to use when spindle sanding and the procedure for securing a spindle
  • Understand disc sander direction rotation and its implications when working on projects
  • Know how to change sanding discs
  • Understand the rotation pattern on a random orbit sander and why it’s helpful in woodworking

Please make sure to enroll in the Maker Access Pass and complete WOOD101: Workshop Safety before you complete the WOOD103 badge. You can use your badges to track what you've learned, show potential employers, and (after earning enough badges) even receive fun perks. Almost all of our equipment requires training and badges before use.
