Thanks for your interest in WOOD104: Learning lathes!

In order to use the Baleigh variable speed wood lathe in the EERB Innovation Wyrkshop woodshop, you must attend this course. Please make sure that you've already attended and passed SAF150: Woodshop Safety before completing this workshop. By the end of the course, students will:

  • Be able to identify the lathe and different chisels
  • Know how to use the chisels and lathe safely and properly
  • Know what different chisels are called, and when they are used in turning
  • Be able to identify the lathes headstock, tail stock, tool rest, live center and spur center
  • Know how to adjust the tool rest appropriately for turning spindles
  • Know how to place a piece in the lathe for turning safely
  • Be able to adjust the direction of spin and RPM on the lathe
  • Understand which directions to turn a piece in and what RPM to use for roughing, shaping and finishing a piece on the lathe
  • Know why it’s important to use a face shield when turning
  • Know how to remove the face plate, mount it to their work piece and reattach to the head stock
  • Know how to remove the live center and spur center from the lathe
  • Know how to determine the center of a piece, and prepare a turning blank

Please make sure to enroll in the Maker Access Pass program and complete SAF150: Woodshop Safety before you complete the WOOD104 badge. You can use your badges to track what you've learned, show potential employers, and (after earning enough badges) even receive fun perks. Almost all of our equipment requires training and badges before use.
